The Om mantra has been embossed decoratively around the outside of the main barrel and the wheel itself sits atop a double vajra symbol. Inside the wheel the same Om Mani Padme Hum mantra has been written many hundreds of times and turning the wheel is believed to have the same meritorious effect as orally reciting it.
